The Forgotten Files has officially entered pre-production, marking the next stage in bringing the original British drama series to the screen.

Set within the world of Britain’s children’s care system, the series follows the lives of young people growing up in care alongside the social workers, care staff and others whose decisions shape their futures.

At the centre of Episode One is Aisha Summers, a social worker who knows the system from both sides. Having experienced care herself, Aisha has built a career protecting young people within the same system that once shaped her own life. But as she attempts to confront a difficult past, the boundaries between her professional and personal worlds begin to shift.

Around her, a group of young people navigate fractured families, residential care, friendship, identity, exploitation and the need to belong.

Inspired by true experiences, The Forgotten Files is being developed as a grounded contemporary British drama. Rather than looking at young people in care simply through assessments, statistics and case records, the series focuses on the people behind that paperwork and the lives that cannot be reduced to a file.

PREPARING FOR PRODUCTION

Pre-production on Episode One is now underway, with work beginning across casting, locations, production design, cinematography and crew.

The production is being developed with a strong emphasis on authenticity. From residential homes and council offices to estates, bedrooms and ordinary London streets, the aim is to create a world that feels lived-in and recognisably British rather than heightened or romanticised.

Casting will also be central to that approach, with the production seeking performers capable of bringing honesty and complexity to characters who are rarely represented on screen without being defined entirely by their circumstances.

A STORY ABOUT MORE THAN CARE

While the care system forms the world of The Forgotten Files, the series is ultimately about people.

It is about identity, family, loyalty, vulnerability and belonging. It explores what can happen when a young person feels unseen, what makes someone vulnerable to exploitation, and the enormous difference between knowing what has been written about somebody and actually knowing them.

As Episode One moves towards production, further updates will be released covering casting, principal photography, behind-the-scenes development and first-look material.

Every child in care has a file. But no file tells the whole story.
